Property Description

Significant in architecture for its stonemasonry construction, the Beachley House features a design that classifies it as a tavern: the pass-through opening in the east parlor. Built in Georgian Style, it features a center hall with double rooms on each side. Both interior front and rear batten doors with strap hinges are present and intact. The currently used front door brings you into the east front parlor, which was the principal public room of the tavern. Across the hall is the "Ladies Parlor" with a doorway to the current kitchen. There are 5 fireplaces, 2 of which are still used. The 2nd floor originally had a single room across the front part of the house and was used as a long festivities room. It was partitioned in the late 19th/early 20th century and now presents 3 bedrooms and a spacious bathroom. The attic, formerly the dormitory, has wide plank floors, hand hewn beams and is accessed with full width stairs from the upper landing. The basement also displays hand hewn beams and was considered an "English Kitchen."

Renovations were completed in 1998 and encompassed new heat, plumbing and electric. The interior walls were replastered and the exterior stonework was repointed.

The Beachley House, located within the proposed National Historic Landmark boundary of the South Mountain Battlefields, is also significant in Civil War military history, being in the direct line of advance of McClellan's Union forces toward South Mountain on September 14, 1862.

In the mid 1840's, American statesman and orator Henry Clay is said to have visited with the tavern's proprietor.
